When in 1540, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto first reached what would later become Myrtle Beach, SC bringing the first European visitors, he discovered the Beach’s native inhabitants in a series of condos along the seashore. Today, those condos are largely used as resorts for vacationers from near and far.
For our first anniversary, Holly and I decided to book a week at one of the condos, the Beach Cove Resort, in North Myrtle Beach, SC. In fact, I’m writing this from our balcony! We’ve had a lot of fun so far; we’ve gotten to switch off from the pools, the hot-tub, and the ocean. Best of all, it’s barely broken 80 degrees while we’ve been here.
Since we drove down from Chicago for about 9 hours, (making a quick stop at Sonic… yet another goal accomplished), we stopped for the night at a Holiday Inn Express in Asheville, NC. The rooms there were really nice; tall beds with soft sheets, nice furniture, and a marble bathroom sinktop! The front desk told us we were about 5 hours away from Myrtle Beach, which was spot-on.
Our stay in Asheville I think left us spoiled, since our room at Beach Cove wasn’t as nice, but the area around Myrtle and the view of the ocean more than made up for that.
Still exhausted, Monday wasn’t much for fun beach time, but Tuesday we sat out all day. That is, until we had our anniversary dinner at Greg Norman’s Australian Grille; my mom & dad sprang a gift certificate for our meal there, and I have to tell you… it was the best dinner I’ve had since LoveFest. I had an ahi tuna steak with bourbon glaze and truffles, and Holly had a queen prime rib. Later we walked along the shops just outside of the restaurant to see if we could find any ‘goodies’ to bring back home.
Today we lounged in the ocean and the hot tub until it started to rain, so we retreated to our room for lunch and some nap time. But I think Holly wants to try out something called “Alligator Adventure” that’s in town, so we’re probably off to do that soon. And on Thursday, we have a “Shelling and Lighthouse Cruise” that she wanted to do.
To be continued…
